    Python AST Parser for TypeScript

    npm version npm downloads JSR Release Test codecov semantic-release License: MIT

    A comprehensive TypeScript-based Python source code parser that generates Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) mirroring the shape of CPython's own ast module, as defined by the Python ASDL grammar specification. This library provides complete parsing, unparsing, and AST traversal infrastructure, with bidirectional Python code ↔ AST conversion.

    πŸ“– API documentation Β· πŸ› Playground (Tree/JSON views of the AST, plus a Flow tab with a function-level cyclomatic-complexity call-graph heatmap)

    • πŸ” Complete Python lexical analysis - Tokenizes Python source code with full syntax support
    • 🌳 AST generation - Creates comprehensive Abstract Syntax Trees based on Python ASDL grammar
    • οΏ½ Code generation - Convert AST back to Python source code with unparse()
    • 🚢 AST traversal - Walk and visit all nodes in the syntax tree
    • πŸ“„ JSON serialization - Export ASTs to JSON format for analysis or storage
    • πŸ”§ TypeScript types - Full type definitions for all AST nodes
    • 🐍 CPython-compatible - AST node shapes mirror Python's own ast module (field names, node types, lineno/col_offset/end_lineno/end_col_offset)

    Full generated API docs (every exported function, class, and type): kriss-u.github.io/py-ast

    Parses Python source code and returns an AST. Handles any Python code - expressions, statements, modules, classes, functions, etc.

    Parameters:

    • source (string): The Python source code to parse
    • options (ParseOptions, optional): Parsing options

    ParseOptions:

    • filename (string): Source filename for error reporting (default: '<unknown>')
    • comments (boolean): Include hash comments (# comment) in AST (default: false)
    • feature_version (number): Python feature version

    Note: Triple-quoted strings ("""text""") are parsed as regular string literals, not comments. Only hash comments (# comment) are treated as comments when comments: true is enabled.

    Returns: Module - The root AST node containing all parsed statements

    // Basic usage - handles any Python code
    const ast = parse("x = 42");
    const ast2 = parse("def func(): return 42");
    const ast3 = parse("class MyClass: pass");

    // With options
    const ast = parse("x + y", {
    filename: "my_script.py",
    comments: true,
    });

    Converts an AST node to a formatted string representation for debugging and analysis.

    Parameters:

    • node (ASTNodeUnion): The AST node to dump
    • options (object, optional): Formatting options
      • annotateFields (boolean): Show field names (default: true)
      • includeAttributes (boolean): Include line/column info (default: false)
      • indent (string | number): Indentation for pretty printing (default: null)
      • showEmpty (boolean): Show empty arrays/null values (default: false)

    Returns: string - A formatted string representation of the AST

    import { dump, parse } from "py-ast";

    const code = "def hello(name): return f'Hello, {name}!'";
    const ast = parse(code);

    // Basic dump
    console.log(dump(ast));
    // Output: Module(body=[FunctionDef(name='hello', args=Arguments(args=[Arg(arg='name')]), body=[Return(value=JoinedStr(values=[Constant(value='Hello, '), FormattedValue(value=Name(id='name')), Constant(value='!')]))])])

    // Pretty printed with indentation
    console.log(dump(ast, { indent: 2 }));
    // Output: Module(
    // body=[
    // FunctionDef(
    // name='hello',
    // args=Arguments(
    // args=[
    // Arg(arg='name')
    // ]
    // ),
    // body=[
    // Return(
    // value=JoinedStr(
    // values=[
    // Constant(value='Hello, '),
    // FormattedValue(value=Name(id='name')),
    // Constant(value='!')
    // ]
    // )
    // )
    // ]
    // )
    // ]
    // )

    // Include location information
    console.log(dump(ast, { includeAttributes: true }));
    // Shows line numbers and column offsets

    // Show all fields including empty ones
    console.log(dump(ast, { showEmpty: true }));
    // Shows decorator_list=[], returns=null, etc.

    Alternative name for unparse() with slightly different parameter order.

    import { parse, toSource } from "py-ast";

    const ast = parse("x = 42");
    const code = toSource(ast, " "); // 2-space indentation
    console.log(code); // "x = 42"

    Note: Placeholder function. Read file content first and use parse().

    Safely evaluates Python literal expressions by parsing and evaluating constant values.

    console.log(literalEval("42")); // 42
    console.log(literalEval('"hello"')); // "hello"
    console.log(literalEval("[1, 2, 3]")); // [1, 2, 3]
    console.log(literalEval('{"key": "value"}')); // {key: "value"}

    Converts an AST node back to Python source code. This is the reverse operation of parse().

    Parameters:

    • node (ASTNodeUnion): The AST node to convert back to source code
    • options (object, optional): Unparsing options
      • indent (string): Indentation string (default: " " - 4 spaces)

    Returns: string - The generated Python source code

    import { parse, unparse } from "py-ast";

    // Basic roundtrip: parse then unparse
    const originalCode = "def greet(name):\n return f'Hello, {name}!'";
    const ast = parse(originalCode);
    const generatedCode = unparse(ast);

    console.log(generatedCode);
    // Output: def greet(name):
    // return f"Hello, {name}!"

    // Perfect roundtrip for simple expressions
    const simpleCode = "x = 42";
    const simpleAst = parse(simpleCode);
    console.log(unparse(simpleAst) === simpleCode); // true

    // Custom indentation
    const ast2 = parse("if True:\n pass");
    const twoSpaceCode = unparse(ast2, { indent: " " });
    console.log(twoSpaceCode);
    // Output: if True:
    // pass

    // Works with all Python constructs
    const complexCode = `
    class Calculator:
    def add(self, a, b):
    return a + b

    async def process(self, items):
    results = [await self.compute(x) for x in items if x > 0]
    return results
    `;

    const complexAst = parse(complexCode);
    const regenerated = unparse(complexAst);
    // regenerated contains valid Python code equivalent to the original

    Quote Style Preservation:

    The unparser automatically preserves the original quote styles used in string literals when parsing with comments enabled:

    const codeWithMixedQuotes = `
    name = 'John'
    message = "Hello, world!"
    multiline = '''This is
    a multiline string'''
    `;

    const ast = parse(codeWithMixedQuotes, { comments: true });
    const unparsed = unparse(ast);
    console.log(unparsed);
    // Output preserves original quote styles:
    // name = 'John'
    // message = "Hello, world!"
    // multiline = '''This is
    // a multiline string'''

    Recursively walks all nodes in an AST tree, yielding each node in depth-first order.

    import { parse, walk } from "py-ast";

    const ast = parse("x = [i**2 for i in range(10)]");

    console.log(`${node.nodeType} at line ${node.lineno || "unknown"}`);
    }
    // Output:
    // Module at line 1
    // Assign at line 1
    // Name at line 1
    // Load at line unknown
    // ListComp at line 1
    // BinOp at line 1

    Code Generation: All parsed constructs can be converted back to Python source code using unparse(). The unparser produces clean, readable Python code that maintains semantic equivalence with the original.

    This library's AST mirrors CPython's own ast module β€” the same node types, field names, and position attributes (lineno/col_offset/end_lineno/ end_col_offset) ast.parse() produces β€” while running entirely in TypeScript/JavaScript, with no Python runtime involved:

    1. TypeScript-native - Built for TypeScript/JavaScript environments
    2. Bidirectional - Parse Python to AST and unparse AST back to Python
    3. JSON serializable - All nodes can be directly serialized to JSON
    4. CPython-shaped AST - Node types and fields match ast.dump()'s output, not a JavaScript-tooling-inspired format
    5. No Python runtime required - Runs entirely in Node.js/browser
